The Event Night at the Art Museum 2017-18

Our Art Room Event theme this year is “A Night at the Art Museum”

All of the pieces connect to either an artist, a famous work of art and or an art movement

Kindergarten: “Sunflower Splash”

Taking inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh’s vibrant sunflower paintings and the unique splash and spatter techniques of American abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock the kindergarten artists created hand painted paper and cut paper collage elements to make this modern masterpiece

First Grade: "Gay Purree! "

This mixed media collage piece has 3 major influences: Henri Rousseau (Primitive painter) Marc Chagall (Magical Expressionism) and Sonia Delaunay (Geometric Abstraction) There are over 90 unique tigers peeking out at you from a hand made jungle against a geometric tissue paper sky while an oh so French tiger keeps a watchful eye on a floating Eiffel Tower.

Second Grade: “Color Wheel Guitars”

Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s music centered art pieces and the work of American collage master Romare Bearden the 2^nd grade students painted paper in primary and secondary colors to build the guitar forms. The border is designed with 90+ hand drawn guitar picks.

 

Third Grade: “the Tree of Love”  

Gustav Klimt’s lush and golden painting the, Tree of Life, is the inspiration for this creation by our 3^rd grade artists. They cut and designed over a 100 paper hearts and flower and applied dozens of blades of grass, bits of wind and star dust magic to please the eyes and comfort the heart.

Fourth Grade: “Mona and Joe”

Mona Lisa is the most famous work of art in the Western World. Painted by the Renaissance master Leonardo di Vinci it has captured the imagination of views for centuries. The 4^th grade students have created a colorful modern Mona who is energized by her Latte, the entire mosaic is made from recycled Starbucks gift cards.

Fifth Grade “Dog with a Pearl Collar”

Humor abounds in this mixed media masterpiece that blends the compositional elements of Vermeer’s “Girl with a pearl earring” and the subject sensibility of contemporary artist William Wegman. Dog with a Pearl Collar is created from masking tape, packing tape, newspapers, yellow pages, post its, magazines and a few other surprises. The very Baroque golden frame is composed of over 100 individual clay dog inspired trinkets and toys.

Sixth Grade: “18 Fridas”

Fame…The Papa of Pop Art Andy Warhol is famous for his multiple silk screen images of such famous people as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor and surrealist Artist and political activist Frida Kahlo is as famous for her personal style and unibrow as she is for powerful self-portraits.  The 6^th grade artists combined these two colorful art figures in this paper collage composition of 18 Fridas, a true Pop Culture tribute!

1/2/3 Day of the Dead – Connect Day of the Dead to Ancient Cultural traditions of Central America-Classroom Social Studies themes. Big head little body cut paper and collage

4/5 + Circle City- One-point perspective city drawing with pencil

6/8-2+Pompeii volcano relief- Discussion of Ancient Pompeii, what is a volcano, what was life like in that time…? Using white card stock students drew a volcano shape, built a relief form using tissue paper and glue, color and details with oil pastels and watercolors.

7-Event Project –18 Fridas working in teams of  5-6 students  they created Frida images using stencils and collage.


9-10 3-D Clay Artifacts  – working with air dry clay, inspired by ancient artifacts, idols and statues students created their own “ancient” artifact adding color with metallic paints and glazes. What is your story?

11/12 + Mat and Mount DOD sugar Skull-complete all projects adding 3-D elements to the Day of the Dead collages.


Extras:
Perspective and Shading- sketch paper warm up exercises using pencil to help students develop skills in shading shapes and forms, and understanding how to create the illusion of space and perspective on flat surface

5th grade moving to mastery 2017-18

What did we do in Art this year? Lots of skill building, discussion, observation, and messy wonderful hands on creating!

Starry Night inspired Cityscape- Building a Dramatic sky inspired by Turner and Van Gogh, using crayon, watercolor and sea salt. City silhouette images were added with cut paper collage and embellished with gel pen. Inspired by images of famous Architectural sites around the world.

Human Face: Line and design work sheets and introduction to basic face drawing skills


Royal Dogs- What is a royal portrait? Brief overview of court portrait painting. Humorous approach to portraiture, using printed support materials of both cartoon and realistic dogs, students developed their own imagery using pencil, sharpie, gel pen, color pencil, crayon and water color. Design and decorate a frame.


Event project- Dog with the pearl collage, collage and clay pieces to create a 3-D frame. Portrait image made from repurposed materials such as yellow pages, packing tape and paper towels.


3-D this is me! Cartoon inspired self-portrait using modeling clay, inspired by cartoons, Pop art, animation. Exploring new materials

4th grade Pop Art explosion 2017-18

What did we do in Art this year? Lots of skill building, discussion, observation, and messy wonderful hands on creating!

1-1+ Doodle Grid-Measure and lay out a grid on a square of sketch paper, over the year add different patterns and designs to each square

 2/3/4/5-4 Day of the Dead Foil Skulls –Day of the Dead Inspired Sugar Skull on foil. Sharpies, and pencil. Discussed cultural connections and looked at images and design support material 

6-1 Fall at the lake- Seasonal connected watercolor project, inspired by the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, water pencils, pencil and watercolor paints

7-1+ Event Project-Coffee drinking Mona Lisa/Mona and Joe cut out recycled Starbucks gift cards, organized by color to create the collage. 

8/9/10-3+ Mona goes Pop- Combining inspiration from 2 major Artists, Mona Lisa/di Vinci and Pop Art Andy Warhol, students traced the iconic image of Mona Lisa on clear overhead sheets using Sharpie marker and build a colorful under collage, resulting in images like the graphic work of Warhol. 

11/12-2+ Pop Art Soup- Students design their own soup label inspired by the work of Andy Warhol. Marker and color pencil, building a design.

3rd grade building complexity 2017-18

1/2/3-3+ Zentangle Patchwork Landscapes-Sharpie on Neon Paper, build a whimsical landscape with 3-5 hills,1-3 trees, create interest with pattern and design. Use gel pens to add detail and drama. Your imaginary landscape what is your story, who lives here?

4/5/6-3+ Broken Heart color values and line project-color value and blending, creating an interesting composition with a limited color palette. Inspired by Pop Art and Picasso

7-1+Event Project-Tree of love, collage and painting using metallics, inspired by Klimt’s Tree of Life painting.

8 Modigliani self-portraits- how to draw a face oil pastels and direct drawing using a grid format, color blending setting a mood or tone.

9-12 Colorful Still Life- Matisse inspired cut paper, oil pastels, collage, pattern building, design and 3-D elements. Creating a complex composition and following a series of directions.

1-1+Mr. Bones Part I – compare/ contrast, imaginary skeletons with observed drawings, graphite pencil.

2/3-2+Cubist Fairytale Villains- Art History connection, color values, hue plus black or white, construction paper collage

4/5/6-3+ Little Red Riding Hood-Russian Matryoshka nesting/concentric circles, dolls are created using printed resources working with design, storytelling, details and composition. Sharpie/Watercolor and Watercolor pencils. Marc Chagall was our art history inspiration.

7-1+ Event Project Picasso musicians- colorful Guitars inspired by Picasso and Romare Bearden, color blending and collage


8 Chinese New Year dragon- cross culture, designing with shapes and exploring chalk pastels

9/10-2+ Dinosaur Yearbook- building on class themes, students create their own Dino student for a group yearbook project. Printed resources, pencil, color pencil, sharpie and crayon


My colorful Guitar- artists created their own guitar centered composition using, crayons, color pencil, bleeding tissue paper, markers and collage to build their image and fill it with electric energy!

1/2-3 Rainbow Spider-crayon resist, watercolor, Sharpie and collage. Learning about spiders, body parts and habits.


3 (on going)  Hand-made- tracing the human hand, looking at Aboriginal Art work, adding patterns and designs, using sharpies, gel pens and color pencils on black paper. Where are we in the world?


4/5 - Direct drawing line direction and colors connected to Sonia Delaunay – line direction and color building to create an interesting composition.

6/7 Little Red Hen- trace a pattern, cut and design, create a nest, following a series of directions.

8-1.5 Event project- Rousseau jungle image-drawing and tissue paper collage


9/10/11Tiger Tiger -  Direct drawing of tiger face create jungle with cut paper add flowers and insects 


12-1 Cherry Blossom project painting inspired by Japanese pen and ink compositions. Color blending to create blossoms

1-1 Start of School Self Portrait-Introduction to portraits: What do I look like?  What are the parts of the human face? What is your story? Pasta permission slips

2-1 Pasta Art Fun – learning about lines and eating some noodle art.

3-1Lines straight lines curvy- continue our study of lines looking at famous works of art for inspiration. Matted work, followed a series of directions, used a ruler.

4/5 2 Color blending pumpkins-Shapes and color blending (yellow and red to make orange). How do pumpkins grow? The Square pumpkin book

9/10 Red Rectangular Robots- 2 Part project, following a series of directions, adding details, construction paper, crayons and embellishments- What is your Robots Job or Special Skill?  Primary colors

11/11 Model Magic clay snails- color blending and building a coil shape with clay

12+-1 End of the year wrap up- cutting out leaves with name labels for pumpkins, flowers and snails

What did we do in Art this year? Lots of skill building, discussion, observation, and messy wonderful hands on creating!

Zentangle Patchwork Landscapes-Sharpie on Neon Paper, build a whimsical landscape with 3-5 hills,1-3 trees, create interest with pattern and design. Use gel pens to add detail and drama. Your imaginary landscape what is your story, who lives here?

Name Game- Pop Art introduction, Sharpie and color pencil

Event Project- Bon-Bon Banquet. Collage group project

Ice Cream art value scale painting project Color blending creating a value scale, understanding art vocabulary, following a series of directions. Tempera paint and mode podge. Pop art connections

Sweet Tooth (2 part project) Charlie and the chocolate factory inspired, design your own candy, packaging, font, design. Candy used as a boarder for Gumball Pop Art.  Each student created their own Gumball for the class Gumball Machine.

Little Red Riding Hood-Russian Matryoshka nesting/concentric circles, dolls are created using printed resources working with design, storytelling, details and composition. Sharpie/Watercolor and Watercolor pencils. 

Event Project-4 Fairytale Villains-Wicked Queen (red) , Evil Wizard (blue), Troll (green) , Witch (purple)  Picasso portrait style 

Chinese New Year Dragon- one day project using lines and geometric shapes to create a unique dragon inspired by Chinese culture. Crayon, neon crayons and color pencil. 

Dinosaur Yearbook- building on class themes, students create their own dinosaur teacher/student for a group yearbook project. Printed resources, pencil, color pencil, sharpie and crayon
