Fifth Grade Observe/Imagine 2018-19





1/2/3 +Starry Night inspired Cityscape- Building a Dramatic sky inspired by Turner and Van Gogh, using crayon, watercolor and sea salt. City silhouette images were added with cut paper collage and embellished with white and metallic gel pen. Inspired by images of famous Architectural sites around the world.












4 Imaginary galaxy snapshots: chalk pastels, tracing circles to create planet like shapes and using shading to build a 3-D effect.


5 Human Face: The art of portraiture, Line and design work sheets and introduction to basic face drawing skills 


6-9 -3+Royal Dogs- What is a royal portrait? Brief overview of court portrait painting. Humorous approach to portraiture, using printed support materials of both cartoon and realistic dogs, students developed their own imagery using pencil, sharpie, gel pen, color pencil, crayon and water color. Design and decorate a frame.











10+Event project- I dream the Universe- Acrylic paint, glitter paper, embellishments and clay are all part of this mixed media art piece. Set against a collage of green leaves the lone figure is deep in thought, star dust and star light together in one moment and it is truly magical! Composition and parts built/constructed by students.

11/12+3-D this is me! Cartoon inspired self-portrait using modeling clay, Pop art, animation. Exploring new materials, humor, emotion, storytelling.  Stop motion films and the classic Mr. Bill.



Fourth Grade Designers 2018-19


1/2-3 Day of the Dead Foil Skulls –DOD Inspired Sugar Skull on foil. Sharpies, and pencil. Discussed cultural connections and looked at images and design support material, Cultural connections. Introduction to Frida Kahlo's work/life. 

4-5  Fall at the lake- Seasonal connected watercolor project, inspired by the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, watercolor pencils, pencil and watercolor paints. Building a composition from abstract to landscape, color blocking and details




6+ Event Project- Tumble for Me- Geometry and quilting come together in this paper collage of shape and color. Based on the traditional tumble block quilting pattern this non-traditional artwork has over 100 hand cut and personalized pieces that work together to give a rhythmic flow to this dynamic composition.




















7-10 Pop Portraits - Combining inspiration from a variety 
of  Artists, Mona Lisa, di Vinci, Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earring, American Gothic and Pop Artist Andy Warhol, students traced one of these iconic images on clear overhead sheets using Sharpie marker and build a colorful under collage, resulting in images like the graphic work of Warhol.



11/12Pop Art Soup- Students design their own soup label inspired by the work of Andy Warhol. Marker and color pencil, building a design. 3-D project

Third Grade Collectors 2018-19


1/2/3-3  Landscapes Perspective Students were introduced the Landscape drawing using a series of table top handouts and an brief art history overview. They could select one of 3 given landscape prompts to create their own composition. Project used pencil, watercolors, watercolor pencils and markers. Your imaginary landscape what is your story, who lives here?

4/5/6-3+ Broken Heart color values and line project-color value and blending, creating an interesting composition with a limited color palette. Marker used to add bold lines. Inspired by Pop Art and Picasso  



7-1+Event Project- Home is Where the Heart Is!: Love=Home, Home=Love, in the spirit of UP, enjoy this charming assemblage of hand created paper hearts, dozens of specialized
rainbow flowers, painted paper grass and hand placed cloud puffs set against an acrylic painted landscaped. There really is no place like this Home!

















8 Modigliani self-portraits- how to draw a face oil pastels and direct drawing using a grid format, color blending setting a mood or tone. Expressive and Emotional project with lots of creative expression.




9-12 Colorful Still Life- Matisse inspired cut paper collage. Draw a table/horizon line, background and foreground, add cut paper symmetrical vase. Creating a complex composition and following a series of directions, building layers and details.

Second grade Storytellers 2018-19


1-2 Cubist Fairytale Villains- Art History connection, color values, hue plus black or white, construction paper collage. Building art vocabulary and connecting to art history





























3/4-5+ Little Red Riding Hood-Russian Matryoshka nesting/concentric circles, dolls are created using printed resources working with design, storytelling, details and composition. Sharpie/Watercolor and Watercolor pencils. Marc Chagall was our art history inspiration.

6  Event Project 
Bear Hug- Drawing inspiration from Russian matryoshka dolls and folk tales this bear family mixed media art piece is colorful, charming and loaded with texture. Tissue paper collage, hand painted flowers and stamped details are just a few of the techniques found in this delightful composition.

7 Chinese New Year dragon- cross culture, designing with shapes and exploring chalk pastels





8/9-10 My colorful Guitar- artists created their own guitar centered composition using, crayons, color pencil, bleeding tissue paper, markers and collage to build their image and fill it with electric energy!

11-12  Dinosaur Yearbook- building on class themes, 2nd grade artists create their own Dino student for a group yearbook project. Printed resources, pencil, color pencil, sharpie and crayon

 4/5  Buggy Bugs- 2 projects one subject: drawing focused using reference materials students created their own imaginary insect (black paper and metallic pencils) the other a symmetrical acrylic body was created by folding and pressing paint. Markers used to add details




6/7 Little Red Hen- trace a pattern, cut and design, create a nest, adding an egg (chick is optional) following a series of directions. 3-D project 





8- Event project- 
Cats with
Flowers, humorous, intelligent, playful and mischiefs describes first graders and cats! These little felines are accessories with dozens of hand drawn and cut out flowers against beautiful tissue paper collaged backgrounds. The horizontal format makes it perfect for hanging over a bed or sofa! drawing/coloring, cutting and tissue paper collage background.

12- Cherry Blossom project painting inspired by Japanese pen and ink compositions. Color blending to create blossoms. Using a double loaded brush, skill building and techniques.

2 Color Theory Fall leaves (yellow and red to make orange). Seasons, colors, plant life. Warm colors, Cool colors…leaves in gutters.


3/4 Color Line Monsters- lines straight lines curvy- continue our study of lines looking at famous works of art for inspiration. Drawing, cutting, watercolor and collage. Expressive faces and Storytelling. 


5-6 Winter Polar Bears- shape and blending, weather and collage. Building a composition through layers. Created Penguin background at the same time as the Bear body with white tempera paint.

7-1.5 Event Project:  Rainbow Unicorn
Inspired by the sugar bright colors of Pop 90’s artist Lisa Frank the Kinder art piece has so much to LOVE. Collaged hand painted papers embellished with glitter and acrylic paint set against a mat black background. This would be the perfect addition to any room.
the Kinder students created the color paper (acrylic paint) and cut out shapes to create a group collage. Fingerprint details on horn. Lots of imaginative fun and exploration. 

8-Penguins on Parade - 3 different body shapes to select . Painted background, color and collage. Discussion about penguin habitats


9/10 Red Rectangular Robots- 2 Part project, following a series of directions, adding details, construction paper, crayons and embellishments- What is your Robots Job or Special Skill?  Primary colors added details with drawing. 


11 Model Magic clay snails- color blending and building a coil shape with clay, Snails lives on  folded leaf with name/room number labels


12+-1 My own Unicorn- Using precut head shapes and scraps from the Event project and their own watercolor test sheet, students cut, colored and designed their own unicorn.
